The CBC (Complete Blood Count) allows us to obtain information on the components of your pet's blood cells. Our technicians examine the cells microscopically. Quantities, types, and physical attributes of red and white blood cells and platelets are analyzed.
The urinalysis is a multi-part test used to evaluate kidney and urinary tract function and performance. Urine is collected and tested in-hospital. The full test analyzes levels of bacteria, crystals, red and white blood cells, glucose, protein, ketones and urine concentration. We may also perform a urine culture if there is evidence of an infection and have the capability to perform a sensitivity. The sensitivity consists of checking the susceptibility of bacteria against a host of antibiotics.
Blood Chemistries and Electrolytes
We can test for specific liver and kidney values, proteins and electrolytes. This is particularly useful as a screening test prior to anesthesia. Blood is often submitted to Marshfield Laboratories when a more comprehensive screening is needed.
Blood pressure is measured in a similar fashion as humans. A small, inflatable cuff is fit snugly around the top of your pet's paw or at the base of their tail and a reading is obtained.
With an instrument called a tonopen, we can measure the pressure of your animal's eye to detect glaucoma or inflammation.
Digital radiography eliminates the need a dark room and chemicals film development. It allows us to take and process x-ray images faster while minimizing the exposure to radiation to our staff and your pet. The radiographs can be viewed on personal computers, allowing the doctors to more easily consult with doctors from other clinics. The digital x-ray also gives doctors the opportunity to zoom in or alter the contrast to better interpret the radiographs as well as making it more convenient to consult with other veterinary professionals.
Ultrasonography is a type of imaging diagnostics used to non-invasively assess tissues of the body. The use of ultrasound can aid in the detection of disease in the abdomen while avoiding more invasive surgical procedures. We can closely examine the architecture and size of internal organs as well as screen for tumors.
